Shawnee State Women's Basketball traveled to Washington Adventist University over the weekend for their 2021-22 season opener. Under new head coach, Dewayne Burroughs, and new supporting staff, the Bears were able to put up strong numbers and come home with a win, defeating Washington Adventist University 91-76.
- Evelyn Oktavec - 21 points on the night, led 6-9 from behind the 3-point line and 7-11 from field goal range, 3 assists
- Kambrayia Elzy - 23 points on the night, 7-7 in free throws, led the team in assists (11)
- Marnae Holland - 14 points on the night, led the team in rebounds with 14 (11 defensive/ 3 offensive), 3 assists
- Anyia Pride - 21 points on the night, 6 offensive and 2 defensive rebounds
The game started off interestingly, with a technical foul on WAU, allowing the Bears to get on the scoreboard first, with Evelyn Oktavec making the first free throw of the night. The first quarter consisted of back and forth points exchanged between the two teams. Washington Adventist was able to end the first quarter ahead, with a lead of 23-22.
The second quarter picked up where the first ended, as points were exchanged back and forth between the two sides. At the end of the second quarter, first half, WAU still led by a minimal margin of 45-43.
After the first minute into the third quarter, the Bears were able to take the lead, and were able to hold onto and extend their lead throughout the quarter. Shawnee was able to gain control of the game, as they were able to end the third quarter on top with a score of 66-61.
In the fourth quarter, Burroughs and his team put their foot on the gas and applied intense pressure to Washington Adventist University. The Bears were able to put together two separate runs of 7 unanswered points, which enabled them to extend their lead and secure the game with almost 3 minutes left to play. Shawnee was able to finish out the quarter and the game with a score of 91-76.
The Bears start off their season off strong with a record of 1-0.
The women's basketball program will look to host their first home game of the season on Tuesday, November 9th against University of Rio Grande. Tip off is scheduled for 7:00pm.
