SSU softball program to host Kentucky Christian in nonconference doubleheader, home opener

The softball program at Shawnee State will commence with its home-opening contests Tuesday afternoon as the Bears will face Kentucky Christian in a nonconference doubleheader that is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. Wednesday afternoon at Portsmouth High School.

Shawnee State, who went 5-3 overall during its trip to the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic, will look to improve upon that record against Kentucky Christian, who is 10-10 so far during the 2020 campaign.

Shawnee State

  • From a hitting perspective, the Bears have been led offensively by senior Ashtyn Saunders, sophomore Gracie Keplinger, and freshmen Andrea Little and Jaymee Sommer.
    • Saunders, who leads the team with a .464 batting average, has posted 13 hits and scored nine runs in 28 at-bats. She's drawn three walks. The senior third baseman, who also leads the team in on-base percentage (.531) and .OPS (1.031), is just three steals away from tying Shawnee State's all-time steals record.
    • Little (.444), Keplinger (.400), and Sommer (.387) have combined for seven doubles so far this season. Sommer leads the team in RBI with eight, while Little's .556 slugging percentage paces the Bears.
  • Pitching-wise, Shawnee State was carried by freshmen Scioto County standouts Hannah Oliver and Madison Sifford. The duo combined to throw 42 of Shawnee State's 51 innings and have collected four winning decisions compared to two defeats in the circle.

Kentucky Christian

  • Offensively, Kentucky Christian has received heavy production from Madison Woodard, Bailey Caster, and Gracie Robinson during the 2020 season.
    • Robinson, who hits .357 for the Knights, leads KCU in doubles (nine), slugging percentage (.571), and runs scored (19) in 2020. The sophomore infielder has a home run and 13 RBI to her credit, and has also drawn 10 walks on the year.
    • Woodard, who leads the Knights with a .387 average, leads KCU in hits (24), at-bats (62), and RBI (22). The catcher has also clubbed a homer this season.
