Shawnee State senior point guard Bailey Cummins continued to add on to an outstanding 2019-20 season, with the do-it-all talent and four-year starter obtaining honors for her performances on and off of the playing court by becoming one of only 21 women's basketball players bestowed with CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) NAIA District I Academic All-District honors, as announced by CoSIDA on Thursday afternoon.
The 2019-20 Academic All-District Men's and Women's Basketball Teams, selected by CoSIDA, recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom.
Cummins, who is averaging 18.7 points, 5.8 assists, and four rebounds per game over the 2019-20 campaign while shooting an outstanding 52.5 percent from the field, is also averaging a 3.43 GPA while majoring in Pre-Med. She is one of six players on the No. 9-ranked SSU women's basketball program who have played in all 28 games, and one of only two players who have started in all 28 contests.
In earning CoSIDA NAIA District I Academic All-District honors, Cummins was one of only five players -- and one of just three seniors -- to be honored with such an achievement. She was also one of 21 players honored nationwide across the four-district realm that CoSIDA allocates for the NAIA.
The additional players who joined Cummins on the NAIA District I first team were Angela Grant, a junior forward from Faulkner (Ala.), Michelle Burns, a junior guard from Point Park (Pa.), Danielle Hanson, a senior forward of Lawrence Tech (Ind.), and Marlena Schmidt, a senior center of Southeastern (Fla.).
Cummins, who sits fourth on the Shawnee State career scoring list with 1,799 points, is also second in program history in career assists, with 633. She sits just four assists off of the career record, which is set by the point guard that preceded her, Abby Feuchter (637). Cummins is also the current program leader in assists per game (4.8) and free throw percentage (87.3) in a career.
No. 9 Shawnee State will turn its attention to its final pair of Mid-South Conference matchups, which will be held at Waller Gymnasium in Portsmouth. The first of those matchups is a home affair against (RV) Cumberlands, Ky., which will commence tonight at 6 p.m.
