In tough losses, it's always good to have perspective going forward.
And it's that perspective that will not only allow the Shawnee State men's soccer program to move forward to Monday's contest against the Midway (Ky.) men's soccer program, but could be one that also rallies the troops and allows Ron Goodson's program to deliver its first win of the 2019 season on Monday afternoon in a nonconference matchup that will be held in Midway.
For Goodson, it's an excellent chance for the Bears to establish momentum and put together a performance that meets the potential that the unit has against a opponent that is well-respected by Shawnee State across the board.
"We are looking forward to getting back into action after the tough loss last game," Goodson said. "I always enjoy playing against Midway and Tim Wolz. He is a class act, and his teams always play the game the way it is supposed to be played."
Midway, who sits with a 0-2 overall record, hasn't scored a goal over its first two affairs and has been outscored by a 14-0 tally over its initial pair of contests, but went 4-5 overall in conference action last season and won 10 games apiece in each of Wolz's first two seasons at the helm of the Eagles. Cristian Melendez -- Midway's leading scorer with four goals and an assist in 2018 -- and Brandon Ballard, who led the team with three assists while adding in a goal the year prior, are sophomores who have been vital to Midway's offensive production.
However, the Bears have more than enough offensive firepower to counteract what the Eagles bring to the table. In addition to Kevin de Lange, newcomers Thomas de Graaw, Mark de Graaf, and Joao Toledo have been impressive on the offensive end of the pitch, while Kade Tomlinson is well on his way to obtaining yet another solid season in goal for Shawnee State.
"With both teams being 0-2, I see two hungry teams looking for their first win of the season," Goodson said. "I expect another tough game that we will have to execute and do a better job of finishing our opportunities."
For Goodson, the wins are sure to follow in his mind -- as long as that talent keeping up its pace from a work ethic standpoint.
"We are coming together, we just need to continue to work hard," Goodson said. "We have the talent in place, now it is just putting it together as a team. Thursday's loss was tough, but I thought that for playing a man down for the majority of second half and overtime, we did a nice job. Now hopefully, we'll rebound from that loss and can obtain our first win of the season."
