Portsmouth, OH – Shawnee Women's Basketball dropped their second conference loss on Saturday, defeated 77-70 by sixth ranked Campbellsville. The Tigers pick up their first win over SSU since Jan. 2016.
Shawnee State shot 40% from the field on 28-70 while held to just 2-16 from the three point line. Campbellsville shot 53% on 27-52, nailing 4-8 from beyond the arc.
As far as scoring goes, it was Bailey Cummins (JR/Brooksville, Kentucky) leading the Bears with 18 points, she also had seven assists. Hannah Miller (SR/Coal Grove, Ohio) finished with 14 points on 5-11 shooting. Laken Smith (SO/Waverly, Ohio) would finish with 12 and Sienna King (SO/Shelby, Ohio) put up 11 points while grabbing 8 boards.
For Campbellsville it was Madison Stewart with a monster game, finishing with 28 points including 3-7 from three. Jordan Doram would finish with 21 points, Caitlin Hall contributed 11 points.
Campbellsville would dominate the opening five minutes, going out on a 12 point run. Shawnee wouldn't score until the 5:47 mark with a Sienna King layup. The Bears would trail by as much as 19, 21-2 with three minutes to go. The Bears would eat into the Tigers lead at the end of the quarter going on a 9-0 run to trail 26-15 at the end of one.
In the second quarter, the Bears adjusted accordingly and managed much better play on both ends of the floor. They would cut the lead to under double digits for the first time when Hannah Miller splashed a mid-range jumper to make it 31-23 with 6:39 to go in the half. With a minute to play, Laken Smith would hit to make it just a three point ballgame. Shawnee State went into locker room with momentum, trailing 37-34.
With less than two minutes played in the third, Shawnee would tie it up for the first time since 0-0 making it 37-37. Campbellsville bounced back, going on a six point run after forcing a turnover and hitting two straight. Laken Smith continued to deliver in the third, making a bucket at the 2:30 mark to bring the Bears within two, 51-49. Campbellsville would strike once more, ending the third with a four point lead 53-49.
In the fourth quarter, Shawnee would come within two once more at the 7:35 mark on a Leah Wingeier (SO/Newark, Ohio) bucket. The Tigers would keep their foot on the gas though, extending their lead to 10 once again with under five minutes to play. Under 2:30 to play, the Bears looked to be down and out, trailing by 9 with the score at 67-58. A Hannah Miller three pointer with 2:15 left gave the Bears life as they would come as close as within three at the 1:20 mark before Campbellsville would go on a final run and win the game 77-70.
The loss drops the Bears to 17-4, 4-2 in conference play as they will now go on the second run through the conference schedule. Campbellsville will improve to 21-2, 7-0 in the Mid-South.
The Bears will take to the road next week, traveling to Life (Ga.) and Cumberland (Tenn.). Tip-off at Life is set for Thursday, Jan. 31st at 6PM.
