Campbellsville, Ky. – Shawnee State softball were swept on Friday afternoon, falling to (4) Campbellsville 5-0 in game one and 5-2 in game two at Hord Softball Field.
Campbellsville would strike early in game one, scoring one run in the bottom of the first. Jacqueline Roof would lead off the inning by being hit by pitch. Rebecca Miller would bunt Roof over to second, and Tori Humphrey would then single to right field to give Campbellsville a 1-0 lead.
The Tigers would add another run in the bottom of the third. Roof would again be hit by pitch with one out, and Miller would then ground into a fielder's choice, to put one on with two out. Humphrey would then hit an infield single to second base, and Alexis Smith would walk to load the bases. Tatum Wise would then throw a wild pitch, allowing Miller to score and give Campbellsville a 2-0 lead.
Campbellsville would blow the game open in the bottom of the fourth. Brianna Scott would open the inning with a single, and Mia Aldridge would single to right field to put two on with nobody out. Dana Adkins then walked to load the bases. With one out, Roof would hit a grounder that would score Scott despite a throw home and keep the bases loaded. Miller then walked to drive in Aldridge. After Humphrey grounded into a fielder's choice that cut down Adkins at home, Smith would draw a two-out walk to drive in Roof and give Campbellsville the final 5-0 lead that they would hold for the win.
Neely Quint got the win for Campbellsville, allowing no runs on eight hits in seven innings of work, striking out four. Tatum Wise took the loss, allowing five runs on six hits in six innings.
Campbellsville would again score in the bottom of the first to take an early lead. Jacqueline Roof led of by reaching base on a single, and again got to second on a bunt by Miller. Tori Humphrey moved roof to third with a fly-out to right field, and roof would score when Alexis Smith reached on an error to give Campbellsville a 1-0 lead.
Shawnee State would score their first run of the day in the top of the second. Stacy Trenholm (FR/Lancaster, Ohio) would lead off the game with a walk, and would get to second on Katlyn Gleich (JR/Grove City, Ohio)'s sacrifice bunt; Gleich would reach on the play. Haley Rawlins (SO/South Point, Ohio) then laid down a sacrifice bunt of her own to move the runners over. With two outs, Megan Shupert-Martin (JR/West Portsmouth, Ohio) would single to left field, scoring Trenholm to tie the game at 1-1.
Shawnee State would then take the lead in the top of the third. Ashtyn Saunders (SO/Lancaster, Ohio) would lead off the inning with a single. Marisa Brown (JR/Liberty Township, Ohio) then doubled to left field, driving in Saunders and giving Shawnee State a 2-1 lead.
Campbellsville would then rally for four runs to re-take the lead in the bottom of the third. Roof would lead off the inning with a walk, then reach third when McKenzie Whittaker (JR/McDermott, Ohio)'s throw to first on Miller's bunt went wild; Miller reached second on the play. Humphrey then singled to right field, scoring Roof and moving Miller to third. Humphrey would steal second base, then get to third on Mackenzie Riley (JR/Proctorville, Ohio)'s error in right field off a batted ball by Smith, with Miller scoring on the play. Brianna Scott would then hit a bunt single to drive in Humphrey, reaching second on the throw home as Smith reached third. Mia Aldridge then laid down a bunt of her own to drive in Smith, giving Campbellsville the final 5-2 score they would hold for the rest of the contest.
Morgan Gailor got the win for Campbellsville, allowing two runs on three hits in seven innings. McKenzie Whittaker allowed five runs on three hits in six innings to take the loss.
The losses drop Shawnee State to 22-18 overall on the season, and to 9-13 in the Mid-South Conference. Campbellsville improve to 38-5 overall and 20-2 in the league.
Shawnee State and Campbellsville conclude their four-game series on Saturday, April 21 with a doubleheader set to begin at 12:00pm from Hord Softball Field.
