Portsmouth, OH - Bears baseball drops the final game of the weekend series with Georgetown, losing 16-1.
Going into Saturday's single game, Shawnee State had dropped two heavy losses in the double header against the Tigers on Friday. The first three innings of Saturday's game felt different though, as the Bears would pick up their first run of the series and hold Georgetown to just 3. JT Boggs (SR/ South Shore, Kentucky) would be responsible for the Bears lone run of the game, clubbing a double before scoring via a Levi Jones RBI.
Jesse James got the start on the mound for the Bears, and started well, allowing just a pair of hits in the first two innings. Heading into the third inning tied 1-1, neither team was able to gain momentum. All that changed for the bats of Georgetown as in the top of the third both Antonio Monroy and Sean Williams homered back-to-back. This put the Tigers up 3-1 headed into the bottom of the third inning.
Danny McGuire (Freshman/Cleveland, OH) led off the third for Shawnee with a single liner to right field. The Bears were unable to capitalize on the base runner, getting shut out the rest of the inning, leaving McGuire on base.
The fourth inning proved to be a slugfest for the visiting Georgetown Tigers, scoring 10 runs on 6 hits. After Georgetown put their first five batters on base, Shawnee State subbed in Casey Claflin (SR/Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) on the mound. The offensive hot streak continued for Georgetown, capped off by a three run home run to right field ff the bat off John Shattles. After the top of four, Georgetown led 13-1.
The rest of the game saw Shawnee State continue to struggle for offensive production. The Bears allowed three more runs in the sixth inning, making the score 16-0. Seth Clement (FR/Kissimmee, Florida) singled in the sixth for SSU, in what would be their last hit. The seventh was scoreless for both, Shawnee State fell by a final score of 16-1.
The loss drops the Bears to 12-23, just 1-13 in the Mid-South Conference. Georgetown improves to 19-18 on the season, 4-8 in conference play.
The Bears return home on Tuesday, April 17th for a non-conference doubleheader against Midway University. First pitch of game one set for 2:00 PM.
