Baseball Tops Webber International 6-5

Bradenton, Fla. – Shawnee State baseball wins first game over spring break, defeating (25) Webber International 6-5 on Tuesday afternoon.

Shawnee State opened the scoring on an RBI single from Levi Jones (JR/Millersburg, Ohio) in the first inning. Sam Gerhold (SR/Shelton, Washington) would also score on an error by the first baseman, then SSU concluded the first inning on an RBI double from Joseph Campos (FR/Orlando, Florida). The Bears pushed their lead to 4-0 in the top of inning two when Dalton Phillips (JR/Hastings, Michigan) hit a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Blake Marshall (JR/Lexington, Kentucky). Webber put their first run on the board in the bottom of the second when they scored on a wild pitch.

Webber would put together a scoring rally in the seventh. Alex Rodriguez reached on an error followed by Chris Medina who singled up the middle, Brett Kaminski walked to load the bases, then a run scoring walk was drawn by Jesse Coleman followed by an RBI single by Quirino Esquivel cutting Shawnee State's lead to 4-3.

The Warriors would tie the game in the bottom of the 9th inning. Chris Medina drew a walk to open the inning followed by another walk to Brett Kaminski, both runners moved to second and third after a wild pitch. Marcus Begg was intentionally walked to load the bases, but yet another walk was surrendered to Christian Rivera evening the score at 4-4.

Shawnee State would reclaim the decisive lead in the top of the 10th when Christian Helton (JR/Lexington, Kentucky) grounded out to second scoring Dalton Phillips, then Cameron Broughton (FR/Clermont, Florida) tallied a crucial insurance run on an RBI single scoring Levi Jones. Webber tried to rally in the bottom of the 10th scoring a run on a passed ball but Shawnee State was able to close out the game for the win.

Jesse James (SR/Grayson, Kentucky) picked up the win for Shawnee State, allowing two runs on no hits in two innings of work while striking out two. Donovan Bertoncini was credited with the loss allowing two runs on four hits in four innings of work while striking out six.

The win improves Shawnee State to 8-7 on the season, Webber International falls to 11-10.

Shawnee State baseball returns to action on Wednesday March 7th with a double header against Ave Maria (Fla.) first pitch in game one is set for 11 am.
