Rio Grande, Ohio – Shawnee State women's soccer coughed up a second half lead, but used an Alison Cook (SR/Liberty Township, Ohio) goal with 40.7 seconds remaining to pull out a 3-2 win at Rio Grande (Ohio) on Saturday night.
Shawnee State would blitz out to an early lead. Adrianna Johnson (SR/Clarksville, Ohio) would score unassisted in the sixth minute, firing home from close range to put Shawnee State up 1-0. Destiny Chester (JR/Canal Winchester, Ohio) would follow up in the 21st minute, finishing past Andrea Vera to give SSU a 2-0 lead. Rio Grande would respond for the remainder of the half, pinning Shawnee State and swarming for eight shots, but good goalkeeping from Michaela Garner (SR/Hebron, Ohio) and a stout SSU defense would see the 2-0 lead out to halftime.
Rio Grande would get a golden opportunity to get a goal back in the 56th minute, when Brooklyn Pruitt found herself one-on-two with Madison Patrick (SO/Carlisle, Ohio) and Michaela Garner. However, Pruitt would get turned by Patrick, and SSU's defender would block her shot wide of the target to preserve the 2-0 lead.
The Red Storm would get a goal on a Shawnee State mistake in the 63rd minute. Garner would play a ball out to Lindsay Bates (SO/Huntington, West Virginia), who headed back toward goal. The header would be pounced on by an alert Payten Davis, who pounced on the ball and slotted home past Garner to cut the lead to 2-1.
Davis would then net the equalizer in the 68th minute. A through-ball would deflect off of Jill Kelly (JR/Germantown, Ohio)'s foot into Davis' path, who was free on goal. Her first attempt was saved by Garner, but she would finish off the rebound to tie the game at 2-2. Davis had a look for a hat trick just two minutes later, but hit it off the post.
Shawnee State would get the winner very late. After Amelia Bragg was given a yellow card for a shove on Bates, Garner would get a free kick in SSU's end. Her kick would find Chester's head, which found the feet of Olivia Ball (JR/Greenup, Kentucky). Ball would slide a ball through to Cook, who finished the move with a goal despite her shot hitting Andrea Vera's hands. The ball would sail into the right corner to give SSU a 3-2 lead, and 40.7 seconds later, the win.
The win improves Shawnee State to 4-7-1 on the season. Rio Grande falls to 5-8-1. The Bears now lead the all-time series with Rio Grande 9-4-0 and have won three in a row over the Red Storm.
