Portsmouth, Ohio – Shawnee State women's basketball extended the NAIA's longest winning streak to 15 games on Saturday afternoon, as the Bears took down Cumberlands (Ky.) 77-53 for Hall of Fame Weekend.
Shawnee State would get off to a hot start, getting out to an early 6-0 lead. The Bears would continue to hold the lead, eventually pushing the lead to 10 thanks to an Ashton Lovely (JR/Jamestown, Ohio) bucket with 3:17 to go. Cumberlands would cut that lead down to five, with Ashley Jackson's three with 50 seconds remaining cutting the SSU lead to 19-14 at the end of one.
Shawnee State would extend their lead again in the second quarter. Lydia Poe (JR/Jackson, Ohio) would hit a pair of buckets near the five-minute mark to give SSU a 29-18 advantage on the Patriots. After Jasmine Rhodes hit a runner, Shania Massie (JR/Greenfield, Ohio) would nail a shot through a foul, and hit the free throw to give Shawnee State their largest lead to that point, 32-20. Hannah Miller (JR/Coal Grove, Ohio) would convert on SSU's next possession to push that lead to a first half-high 14 at 34-20. Cumberlands would again cut the lead, this time with Rhodes hitting a pair of late free throws, as the Bears led 35-25 at halftime.
The third quarter would begin to drag as both teams would find themselves in early foul trouble. Despite 15 fouls called between the two teams, Shawnee State would continue to press their advantage. The lead would reach 20 with 5:36 left in the third on a Leah Wingeier (FR/Newark, Ohio) made basket. Ashton Lovely would hit one out of two free throws one possession later, and Madison Ridout (SR/Jackson, Ohio) would then hit a runner down the lane to get the Shawnee State lead to 53-30, their largest lead to that point. Again, Cumberlands would go on a late run in the quarter to cut that lead, but the Bears would still lead 56-38 after Bailey Cummins (SO/Brooksville, Kentucky) ended an 8-0 Patriot run with a three.
Shawnee State would immediately push their lead back out to 20 to start the fourth quarter as Shania Massie would again hit a tough three point play in transition to give SSU a 59-38 lead. The lead would hover around 20 for the rest of the game as Shawnee State would try to see things out. The game would again be a physical grind as both teams continued to foul. Shawnee State would eventually get the lead to 26 points on a pair of Massie free throws. Megan Morton would hit a basket late to end the scoring and set the final 77-53 score.
Hannah Miller led all scorers on the afternoon with 18 points. Madison Ridout had 13, Shania Massie had 11 and Ashton Lovely added 10 for the Bears.
Jasmine Rhodes had 16 points to lead Cumberlands. Shayla Simpson added 10 for the Patriots.
