Portsmouth, Ohio – Shawnee State women's soccer had their unbeaten streak ended on Tuesday evening, falling to Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) 1-0.
The first half ended tied at 0-0, with the Cougars getting the better chances. Michaela Garner (JR/Heath, Ohio) was called into action early and often, making five key saves to preserve the tie. SSU's best chance came in the 29th minute, when Destiny Chester (SO/Canal Winchester, Ohio) got in on goal but had her shot blocked by Megan Casselberry.
The Cougars would get the breakthrough goal in the second half. Alexa Skal would finish a cross from Amberly Knox on the volley, beating Garner and giving Mount Vernon Nazarene a 1-0 lead that they would preserve.
The loss ends Shawnee State's unbeaten run to start the year at three games, dropping the Bears to 2-1-1. Mount Vernon Nazarene improves to 3-1-0.
Shawnee State are back in action on Friday, September 8 when they travel to Wilmore, Kentucky to take on Asbury (Ky.). Kickoff is set for 7:00pm.
