Portsmouth, Ohio – Shawnee State women's soccer were undone by late goals, falling to #12 Lindsey Wilson 2-0 in their Mid-South Conference opener.
Shawnee State and Lindsey Wilson played to a 0-0 tie at halftime. Lindsey Wilson had the better of the chances, but the best chance of the half went to Shawnee State. Maddie Woodard (SR/Camden, Ohio) broke through the back line and was in on goal, but her shot was saved by a scrambling Eveljn Frigotto.
The two teams would continue the stalemate in the second half. The early chance for Lindsey Wilson came in the 57th minute, when a scramble in the corner of Shawnee State's end would see Jill Kelly (SO/Germantown, Ohio) commit a penalty. However, Lindsey Wilson's Ivana Damnjanovic would miss the penalty wide left, preserving the 0-0 score.
The Blue Raiders would final make the breakthrough in the 82nd minute, when Emelie Liljered would finish Hannah Schrage's through ball to give Lindsey Wilson the lead. Liljered and Schrage would combine again off a corner in the 87th minute to seal the win for the Blue Raiders.
The loss drops Shawnee State's record to 6-2-1 on the year, and moves the Bears' conference record to 0-1-0. Lindsey Wilson improves to 3-3-3 and 1-0-0 in the league.
Shawnee State's women will return to action on Saturday, September 30 when they host Saint Mary-of-the-Woods (Ill.). Kickoff is set for 2:00pm.
