Bowling Green, Ky. – Shawnee State softball ended their season on Saturday afternoon, falling to Georgetown 5-4 in eight innings to be eliminated from the Mid-South Conference Tournament.
The Tigers opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Chaselyn Allgeier would lead off the inning with a triple and score on Chelsae Osborn's RBI single. After a double play, Sydney Goyette would hit a solo home run to give Georgetown an early 2-0 lead.
Shawnee State would get a run back in the top of the second. Marisa Brown (SO/Liberty Township, Ohio) would single to lead off the inning, and get to second on a fielder's choice by Tara Duncan (SR/Lancaster, Ohio) when Osborn threw wild to second. Mackenzie Riley (SO/Proctorville, Ohio) would bunt the runners over, and after a pop-out by Victoria Bevington (FR/London, Ohio), Brown would score on a passed ball.
Georgetown would get the run back in the bottom of the second. With two outs, Hannah Howes would single and then steal second base. Cassidy Janes would then single down the left field line to score Howes.
Shawnee State would get another run in the top of the third. With one out, Ashtyn Saunders (FR/Lancaster, Ohio) would reach first on a hit by pitch and get to second when Osborn misplayed a grounder by Katlyn Gleich (SO/Grove City, Ohio). Kayla Koch (JR/Lucasville, Ohio) would single to load the bases, and Saunders would score on Brown's fielder's choice to make the score 3-2.
The Bears would rally to take the lead in the top of the fifth inning. Ashtyn Saunders would lead off the inning by bunting and reaching on an error by Kara Howard. Gleich would move Saunders to second with a bunt, and after a pop-out, Brown would single in Saunders to tie the game. Brown would then advance on a wild pick-off throw, and be replaced by Madi Phillips (SO/Portsmouth, Ohio). Tara Duncan then singled to left field to drive in Phillips and give SSU a 4-3 lead.
The lead would not last as Georgetown would rally for one in the bottom of the sixth. Allison Watson would single, and Hannah Morton would double to put runners on second and third with nobody out. Janes would then get her second RBI single of the game to tie the game. Brooke Blevins (FR/Frankfort, Ohio) would work around the bases loaded to keep the score tied.
The game would head to extra innings at 4-4 before Georgetown would walk off in the eighth. With two outs, Hannah Howes would walk and would get to second on Janes' single. Allgeier then hit a single to drive in Howes and end Shawnee State's season.
Audrey Dodd allowed four runs on five hits in eight innings of work to take the win. Brooke Blevins allowed five runs on 14 hits in 7.2 innings to get hit with the loss.
The loss ends Shawnee State's season, with the Bears finishing the year 24-24, with a 12-12 record in the Mid-South Conference. Georgetown improved to 34-13 on the year.
