Portsmouth, Ohio – Shawnee State softball extended their winning streak to eight games on Monday afternoon, defeating Kentucky Christian on Senior Day 1-0 in game one and 4-0 in game two.
Game one would be a frustrating affair for both teams until the sixth inning. In the top of the sixth, Kentucky Christian would load the bases with one out. Ashtyn Saunders (FR/Lancaster, Ohio)' poor throw to first allowed Cassie Adkins to reach first, and McKenzie Vanover and Kailey Rigdon would hit back-to-back singles to load the bases. However, Shawnee State would get out of the inning on a double play. Whitney McKay would hit a sharp ground ball to third that allowed Saunders to throw home for the first out. Miranda Melvin (SR/Oak Hill, Ohio) would throw to first to try and turn the double play, but the throw was late; however, Vanover would make a wide turn around third, and Kayla Koch (JR/Lucasville, Ohio)'s throw to Haley Rawlins (FR/South Point, Ohio) at third would be in time to catch Vanover returning and end the inning.
Shawnee State would break through in the bottom of the sixth. Ashtyn Saunders would lay down a perfect bunt to reach on a single, and would get to second on a bunt by Katlyn Gleich (SO/Grove City, Ohio). Saunders would then score on Marisa Brown (SO/Liberty Township, Ohio)'s RBI single. Kentucky Christian would go 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh to end the game.
Miranda Pauley (SR/Portsmouth, Ohio) would throw a Senior Day shutout for Shawnee State, allowing no runs on seven hits and striking out two to get the win. Whitney McKay would allow only one run on five hits in six innings to get hit with the loss.
Game two would start with two and a half scoreless innings before Shawnee State would take the lead in the third. Ashtyn Saunders would lead off the bottom of the third with a double, and move to third on Katlyn Gleich's sacrifice bunt. Marisa Brown would again drive Saunders in with an RBI single to make the score 1-0.
The game would remain 1-0 until Shawnee State struck for three more runs in the fifth. Saunders would reach on a one-out single and steal second. Katlyn Gleich would take first on a walk, and would be followed by a walk for Brown. Kayla Koch would hit a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in Saunders and move Gleich to third and Brown to second, and Tara Duncan (SR/Lancaster, Ohio) would drive in Gleich and move Brown to third on a single. Mackenzie Riley (SO/Proctorville, Ohio) would drive in Brown with a single, but Duncan, who advanced to second on defensive indifference, would be thrown out at the plate by Kentucky Christian left fielder Jade Spurlock. Shawnee State's pitching would hold Kentucky Christian to get the win.
Brooke Blevins (FR/Frankfort, Ohio) would throw five innings, allowing no runs on only one hit and striking out two to get the win. Whitney McKay would again pitch for Kentucky Christian, allowing four runs on nine hits in six innings to take the loss. McKenzie Whittaker (SO/McDermott, Ohio) would also pitch for Shawnee State, throwing two innings of perfect relief to hold Kentucky Christian to only one hit in game two.
The wins improve Shawnee State's record to 23-16 on the season. Kentucky Christian falls to 2-18 on the year.
