Cocoa Beach, Fla. – Shawnee State softball are off to a 4-0 start to the season after picking up a pair of wins on Tuesday, defeating Bloomfield College (NJ) 4-3 and Morrisville State (NY) 13-1.
Game one would start off well for the Bears as Shawnee State would strike for three runs in the first. Marisa Brown (SO/Liberty Township, Ohio) would drive in Ashtyn Saunders (FR/Lancaster, Ohio) with a single, and Victoria Bevington (FR/London, Ohio) would score on the same play on an error. Brown would come home on another error later in the inning.
Bloomfield would battle back, scoring two in the fourth and one in the fifth to tie the game at three. The game would go to extra innings, and after a scoreless eighth the Bears would get the winning run in the top of the ninth. Katie Wolsefer (FR/Franklin, Ohio) would sacrifice Madi Phillips (SO/Portsmouth, Ohio) over to third, and Phillips would score on Megan Shumpert's single to center field. Brooke Blevins (FR/Frankfort, Ohio) would get the win by throwing a scoreless ninth, concluding four innings of relief.
Shawnee State would jump out early in game two as well, scoring two in the first and the second. The big inning for the Bears would be the top of the fifth, as Mackenzie Riley (SO/Proctorville, Ohio) would hit a three-run homer and Kayla Koch (JR/Lucasville, Ohio) a solo shot one batter later to cap a six-run inning to run rule Morrisville State. McKenzie Whittaker (SO/McDermott, Ohio) would throw four innings of one-run ball to get the win.
With the wins, Shawnee State are now 4-0 to start the season. Bloomfield College, an NCAA-II member institution fell to 6-2, and Morrisville State of NCAA-III fell to 0-4.
Shawnee State play two more on Wednesday morning, facing Bloomfield again in game one and Penn State-Hazleton in game two.
