Softball drops two to #12 Campbellsville

Portsmouth, Ohio – Shawnee State softball opened their Mid-South Conference slate with a pair of losses, falling to #12 Campbellsville 11-2 in six innings in game one, and 8-0 in game two in five innings.

The Bears would grab an early lead in game one when Kayla Koch (JR/Lucasville, Ohio) drove in Ashtyn Saunders (FR/Lancaster, Ohio) for the game's first run. However, Campbellsville would respond with three runs in the top of the second inning, with the big blow being Brittany Rippy's two run double to center field. The Tigers would add two more on Tori Humphrey's two run shot to left field in the third. The Tigers would tack on three more in the fifth and another three in the fifth, including a second two-run homer from Humphrey, to down Shawnee State.

Morgan Gailor would throw five solid innings to pick up the win for Campbellsville, allowing two runs on two hits. Brooke Blevins (FR/Frankfort, Ohio) threw four innings, allowing five runs on eight hits to get hit with the loss.

Game two would be a similar story as it was all Campbellsville from the start. Nelly Quint would throw five shutout innings for the Tigers, and Campbellsville's bats would come alive in the third inning, scoring four runs, capped by a three-run homer from Hailey Szpila.

Quint would allow no runs on only one hit, and strike out five to get the win for Campbellsville. McKenzie Whittaker (SO/McDermott, Ohio) was shelled for eight runs on 12 hits in five innings for the loss.

With the losses, Shawnee State falls to 6-5 on the year and are 0-2 in the Mid-South Conference. Campbellsville improves to 14-7 and are 2-0 in the league.

The Bears and Tigers conclude their four game series tomorrow afternoon with two more games. First pitch is set for 12:00pm.
