Rincon, Puerto Rico – Shawnee State women's basketball were winners on day two of the Rincon Classic on Tuesday afternoon, routing Puerto Rico-Mayaguez 89-41.
UPR-Mayaguez would go up early, but a Hannah Miller (JR/Coal Grove, Ohio) three-point play would give the Bears a lead they would not relinquish. SSU would push their lead out, and back-to-back threes from Ashton Lovely (JR/Jamestown, Ohio) and Madison Ridout (SR/Jackson, Ohio) would put SSU up 20-8 after one quarter of play.
Shawnee State would keep the pressure on in the second quarter. Miller's fastbreak layup with 5:15 to go to halftime gave SSU a 33-13 lead. A Lovely three with 1:06 to go would turn that 20-point lead into a 30-point lead, and Shawnee State would carry a 48-17 lead into halftime.
Shania Massie (JR/Greenfield, Ohio)'s three with 5:46 to go in the third quarter would put Shawnee State up 63-23. From there, SSU would cruise through the second half. The Bears would shoot a blistering 53.3% from the field in the second half to eventually win by the 48-point margin.
Ashton Lovely had 21 off the bench and added 10 rebounds to lead Shawnee State. Hannah Miller added 17, Leah Wingeier (FR/Newark, Ohio) would score a career high 13 points, and Madison Ridout added 10. Bailey Cummins (SO/Brooksville, Kentucky) had eight points and a career high 12 assists in the win, coming just two assists shy of the SSU single game record.
Hillary Martinez had 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead UPR-Mayaguez.
The win improves Shawnee State's record to 12-3 on the season.
Shawnee State will return to action after Christmas on December 30 when they host Brescia (Ky.) at Waller Gymnasium. Tipoff for that game is set for 2:00pm.
