Portsmouth, Ohio – Shawnee State men's basketball started 2017 on the right foot, downing Indiana Tech 82-78 on Monday afternoon.
The Bears played a back and forth first 10 minutes with Indiana Tech before going on a 16-2 run to take a 37-28 lead with 3:10 to go. Shawnee State closed the first half up 45-31.
Indiana Tech would cut the lead to six with 13:22 to go, and would continue a hot start to the second half to close within three at 67-64 with 5:14 to go in the game. However, a rapid 10-3 run by the Bears would help Shawnee State re-extend the lead, and the Bears would hold off a late charge with free throws to win.
A balanced Shawnee State attack would see five players in double figures, led by Jayllen Carter (JR/Portsmouth, Ohio) at 19 points. Frederick Moore (JR/Cincinnati, Ohio) had 16, J Murrell and Bryan Rolfe (FR/Lucasville, Ohio) both added 11, and Corey Benton (FR/Columbus, Ohio) got 10.
Miles Robinson led Indiana Tech with a game-high 27 points. Franklin Lindsey and Scott Schwieterman each had 10.
With the win, Shawnee State improves to 7-8 on the season and snaps Indiana Tech's five game winning streak. The Warriors fell to 11-5.
The Bears are next in action on Saturday, January 7th when they return to Mid-South Conference play by hosting conference leaders Life. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:00pm.
