PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (Soccer)- The Shawnee State Bears prepare to take on the West Virginia Institute of Technology in the annual tradition of Kick for Crohn's game. The SSU Women's Team will open up the double header today at 2:00 p.m. at Shawnee Turf followed by the Men's Team which will kick-off at 4:00 p.m.
Today's games will be the 7th annual Kick for Crohn's games. The event was established by Rob Appell, Head Coach of SSU's Women's Soccer, and Ryan Appell, his brother, to honor their father, Bob Appell, who was a big supporter of the SSU soccer program and followed his sons throughout their athletic careers. On December 26, 2008, Bob passed away from complications of this disease. Today's game will hold a place in many Shawnee State fans hearts as it marks the departure of long time member of the Shawnee State University family, coach Rob Appell.
Today's match will recognize, Andrew Zabrieszack, SSU Men's Soccer player, who is diagnosed with Crohn's disease. Players will be wearing the letter Z on their pre-game shirts in show of support for Zabrieszack.
"The Kick for Crohn's games has a special place for Coach Appell and his entire family," said SSU Athletic Director, Jeff Hamilton. "This hits home on the men's team as well, with Andrew's diagnosis and current fight against Crohn's. We are glad we can bring awareness about Crohn's as well as raise some money to help fight the disease."
When asked about Appell, Hamilton said, "Rob has played a huge role for our soccer programs since the turn of the century. It will be hard to imagine a Shawnee State soccer game without him on the sidelines, but I wish him the best in his future endeavors. This seems like an amazing opportunity for him to pursue and I know he will do a great job! This was a difficult decision for him but we greatly appreciate all the time, effort, and dedication, not only to our soccer teams, but the entire Athletic Department, especially the tennis and softball programs."
Assistant Coach Aubrey Sherman will take over the head coach duties.
Hamilton expressed his excitement for the future and stated, "We are excited to what Sherman will bring to the table as the new coach. She certainly knows the program very well and will continue to lead the program forward. She has been outstanding throughout the transition and I'm very confident she will continue forward in a positive direction. The addition of Ashley Meier as an assistant has also been a huge benefit for the team this year. She brings a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm to the program. I'm very excited to see the future of our women's soccer program."
