PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (Softball) – In game one, the Bears were able to take an early lead, but after surrendering multiple runs in three straight frames SSU was unable to rally, losing 7-2. In game two the Bears found some offensive production scoring a total of five runs, but were unable to find consistency from the pitching staff, dropping the second game by a score of 12-5 against Georgetown on Tuesday afternoon at Boone Coleman Field.
One of the offensive bright spots for the Bears was Megan Shupert (FR/West Portsmouth, Ohio) who finished game one going 2-for-3 with an RBI. In game two Heidi Hall (JR/Greenwich, Ohio) was 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs to go along with Hannah Dittoe (SR/Pickerington, Ohio)'s 3 RBIs and 3-for-4 performance from the plate.
Game One
Dittoe put the Bears on the board first in game one with a sacrifice fly RBI, allowing Shupert to score in the home half of the first inning. Georgetown responded in the top of the third inning, pushing across three runs to take a 3-1 lead in the early stages of the contest.
Georgetown added two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings, stretching their lead to 7-1. The Bears tried to put together a rally in the final inning when Shupert singled, allowing Jenna Crawford (SO/Franklin Furnace, Ohio) to score. SSU was unable to rally back, falling by a final score of 7-2 in game one.
Game Two
Shawnee State replicated their quick scoring philosophy from game one, grabbing three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Dittoe opened the scoring with an RBI single, followed by a two-RBI triple from Hall. Through the first three frames Shawnee State held a 3-0 lead.
Georgetown scored two runs in the fifth and another run in the sixth to bring the game even at three. The next two innings were scoreless before Georgetown produced an offensive explosion scoring nine runs in the top of the ninth inning. Shawnee State was unable to answer scoring only two run in their final at bat. SSU lost game two 12-5
The Bears will take on the University of Pikeville in a two game set Wednesday. The first game is slated for a 4 p.m. start at Paul Butcher Field.
