Offense falters in series finale

LEBANON, TN (Baseball) – The Shawnee State baseball team struggled to find an offensive spark as they fell to Cumberland University in a Mid-South Conference contest by a final score of 11-1 on Sunday afternoon at Ernest L. Stockton Field.

Conner Wilson (SR/San Diego, Calif.) produced the team's lone RBI and was 1-for-2 from the plate. Joe Loyd (FR/Bidwell, Ohio) went 1.2 innings of relief allowing two hits and zero runs, Loyd struck out three.

The Phoenix took a large lead early, scoring six runs in the second inning. SSU was unable to respond early in this one, as through the first three frames Cumberland University led 6-0. Wilson singled up the middle to put the Bears on the board in the top of the fourth, the Phoenix answered scoring two runs in their half of the fourth.

Cumberland University stretched the lead to 10 by scoring three more runs in the fifth inning. SSU was never able to rally back, falling by a score of 11-1.

Following the cancelation of a mid-week contest with Indiana University-Southeast, the Bears now do not return to action until a three game, Mid-South Conference set with the University of the Cumberlands beginning on Friday. First pitch for Friday afternoon's nine-inning contest is slated for 2 p.m.
