Portsmouth, Ohio – Shawnee State women's basketball won their seventh straight game to open the season on Saturday evening, defeating hosts Asbury (Ky.) 94-78 in the Zweifel/Pritchett Classic.
The Bears would shoot out to a big lead at halftime, leading 51-29 at the break. Asbury would pull the game closer in the third quarter, winning the period 25-19, and trailing by as few as 10 with 3:38 to go. However, Shawnee State would stretch the lead back out to 16 and hold off Asbury late.
Five Bears would score in double figures, including a game high 19 from Jen Arnzen (SR/Portsmouth, Ohio). Madison Ridout (JR/Jackson, Ohio) added 18, Brandie Snow (FR/Hartville, Ohio) 17, and Jonessa Moore (SR/Cincinnati, Ohio) 14. Ashton Lovely (SO/Jamestown, Ohio) would also see her first major action of the season, returning from injury to score 15 points.
Asbury's Brittany Warren led the Eagles with 18 points. Oney Harrison had 14 and AJ Lewis added 10.
With the win, Shawnee State continue their hot start to the season, improving to 7-0. Previously unbeaten Asbury fall to 2-1.
The Bears are next in action on Saturday, November 19th when they take on Bethel (Ind.) at Waller Gymnasium. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00pm.
