Portsmouth, Ohio – Shawnee State volleyball played twice on Saturday, falling to Life in both games. The Running Eagles took the first match 3-0 (25-13, 25-23, 27-25), and won the second 3-1 (21-25, 26-24, 25-17, 25-14).
The Bears got out to a slow start in the first match, never leading in the first set en route to a 25-13 loss. SSU challenged Life better after that, rallying from 8-1 down in the second set, and trading points in the third and forcing overtime, but couldn't overcome the Running Eagles, who took the match 3-0.
Game two started with a Shawnee State victory in the first set, 25-21. However, like in game one, Life were able to get the Bears down early in the following three sets, and after overtime in the second set, cruised in sets three and four to seal a 3-1 win.
Lauren Helbig (SR/Mansfield, Ohio) led Shawnee State in kills in game one with 10, with Brianna Wiget (JR/Piketon, Ohio) adding nine kills. Janaya Simmons led the game in kills with 16 for Life, with Sam Diebold adding 11. Helbig again led the Bears with 12 kills in game two. Madison Knipp (SO/Beaver, Ohio) had 24 digs in game two for SSU. Simmons again was the scoring leader in game two, with 15 kills. Diebold added 12 and Chelsea Hill had 11 in the second match.
With the losses, Shawnee State fall to 3-16 on the season, and 0-9 in the Mid-South Conference. Life improve to 10-9, and 3-7 in the league.
The Bears are next in action on Tuesday, October 4th when they travel to Williamsburg, Kentucky to take on University of the Cumberlands. Game time is set at 7:00pm.
