PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (Tennis) – The Shawnee State tennis squad – amidst a stretch of two straight matches versus ranked opponents, fell, 7-2, at the hands of No. 21 Cumberland University on Monday afternoon at the Dr. William E. Daehler Tennis Center.
The two victories for SSU came in the walkover variety, as Cumberland traveled to Portsmouth with just five players. This gave the Bears victories at No. 3 doubles, as well as No. 6 singles before playing a set.
At No. 1 doubles, the combination of Shelbie Wulfekamp (SR/Maysville, Ky.) and Brianna Boggs (SO/Wheelersburg, Ohio) dropped an 8-1 pro set to Angelica Sepulveda and Tarsha de Souza, and Emily Waugh (FR/Wheelersburg, Ohio) and Nicole Harmon (FR/Shelby, Ohio) went down, 8-3, to Trinidad Aguirre and Gisela Amor Garcia, to send the match into singles play at, 2-1, in favor of Cumberland.
With singles getting underway, 16th-ranked Sepulveda took down Wulfekamp in straight sets, as did de Souza to Boggs at No. 2 singles. In fact, all five singles matches played ended in 6-0, 6-0 victories for Cumberland. Garcia defeated Kendi Kistler (FR/Chillicothe, Ohio) at No. 3 and Jasmine Shankar defeated Kanessa Snyder (FR/Gallipolis, Ohio) at No.4.
Aguirre finished things off with a victory at No. 5 over Mara McGee (FR/Baltimore, Ohio), though the Bears did pick up another victory at No. 6 with the walkover win.
