Baseball drops two games at Bluefield College

Bluefield, Va. (Baseball) – The Shawnee State baseball team saw a four-game win streak fall by the wayside, as SSU dropped a pair of non-conference games, 10-1 and 8-5, at the hands of Bluefield College – allowing eight straight runs in the final two innings – on Wednesday at Bowen Field.

The Bears allowed eight runs in the first three innings of game one, as starter Clay Tefft (FR/Wauseon, Ohio) allowed eight runs on 10 hits in four innings of work. Bluefield brought home three runs in the opening frame, as Tyler Timmer knocked a two-out double and Will Kane singled home the first run of the game.

Following a walk to Garrett Schillling, Sawyer McLamb ripped a double down the left field line to plate another and Addison Wood singled home the final run of the inning.

After a scoreless second, the Bears brought home their lone run of the game on a passed ball that allowed Mike Watson (FR/Niles, Ohio) – who reached on a leadoff single – to scamper home.

The Rams answered with a five-run third to put the game out of reach. Timmer opened the inning with a leadoff single and Kane doubled down the right-field line to plate one. After a hit batter, McLamb singled to load the bases and Nic Ratliff cleared the bases with a double. A Tyler Rome double scored Ratliff and Bluefield controlled the contest, 8-1.

BC knocked home two more runs in the fifth on an RBI double from Timmer and an RBI single from Kane to bring the game to its final score. Tefft took the loss in the contest, falling to 3-2 on the season. Chaz Miller was the winning pitcher for the Rams, going five innings, while striking out five and walking one.

Game two saw SSU jump out to an early lead as the Bears brought home three runs in the third. Austin Wells (FR/Grayson, Ky.) led things off with a single and Jacob Waters (JR/DeWitt, Mich.) put runners on second and third with a double. Matt Dvorscak (FR/Whiting, Ind.) followed with a two-RBI single and scored one batter later on an RBI groundout from Connor Wilson.

In the fifth, Shawnee State made it 5-0 when – with two away – Blake Maines (SO/Burlington, Ky.) doubled to left field. Wilson added an RBI single, and Mauro Olivarria (JR/San Diego, Calif.) knocked in a run with an RBI double.

That's when the wheels fell off.

The Rams brought home four runs on three hits and an error in the fifth inning, cutting the deficit to one. The inning was led by an RBI single from Tyler Timmer, a Bears' error and a pair of walks with the bases loaded.

Bluefield added four more runs to take the lead in the sixth, this time with just two hits. A pair of walks and an error plated two runs, before a double from McLamb brought home two more.

The Bears put one runner aboard in the seventh, but were shut down by Dylan Ruth, who earned the victory in two innings of work. Ruth allowed just one hit, while striking out two and walking one.

Mason Wisner (SR/Bay Village, Ohio) took the loss for the Bears, despite both of his runs allowed being unearned. The Bears used a committee of hurlers, providing seven arms in just six innings of work.

The Bears turn around quickly for a single game with West Virginia Tech on Wednesday at Branch Rickey Park. SSU took down the Golden Bears one week ago, 11-4. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
