Baseball earns first MSC victory in blowout fashion

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (Baseball) – After an 0-3 start in Mid-South Conference play last weekend at St. Catharine College, the Shawnee State baseball got one in the win column in blowout fashion, defeating the University of Pikeville, 12-1, Saturday at Johnnie LeMaster Field.

It took SSU four innings to get on the board, but the Bears did so in a big way, plating five runs in the frame. Jacob Waters (JR/DeWitt, Mich.) and Blake Maines (SO/Burlington, Ky.) opened things up with back-to-back singles, and Conner Wilson (JR/San Diego, Calif.) followed with a base knock to load the bags.

Mauro Olivarria (JR/San Diego, Calif.) opened the scoring with an RBI single of his own, before a sac fly from Mason Wisner (SR/Bay Village, Ohio) made it 2-0. Dalton Tinsley (SR/Kokomo, Ind.) added another single to reload the bases, and Drew Haislop (SO/Oak Hill, Ohio) provided the big knock, lifting an RBI double to clear the bases and make it 5-0 in favor of the visitors.

Wisner added an RBI of his own in the fifth, pushing the score to 6-0 when he singled home Waters with two away in the frame.

SSU added two more in the seventh when – following a leadoff walk from Waters – Maines tripled and Olivarria added a sacrifice fly. Pikeville finally got on the board in the bottom of the frame, when Connor Osbourne singled home Erik Manning to plate the lone run against SSU starter Derek Moore (SO/Wheelersburg, Ohio).

Moore finished the contest going eight complete, allowing just the lone unearned run on eight hits. Moore struck out five while not walking any to move to 2-3 this season.

Already enjoying an 8-1 advantage, the Bears put the game away in the eighth with four more crossing the plate. Haislop opened things up with a single and Adam Turner (FR/Lansing, Mich.) was hit by a pitch. Waters added a walk to load the bases with one away, and Andrew Vanthournout (FR/Bowling Green, Ky.) knocked in a run with a single.

With two away, Matt Dvorscak (FR/Whiting, Ind.) singled home a run and Wisner followed with a two-RBI knock, plating Vanthournout and Waters. Moore allowed a hit in the bottom of the frame, but held UPike scoreless to bring the game to a close an inning early.
