Shawnee defeats Pikeville, 75-65, on Senior Day

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (Women's Basketball) – No. 20 Shawnee State University defeated the no. 23 University of Pikeville on SSU's Senior Day. Ali Zieverink (JR/West Chester, Ohio) put up a career-high 39 points Saturday afternoon at Frank & Janis Waller Gymnasium.

Shawnee got off to an 8-0 start to the contest. The Bears forced several turnovers that led to breakaway layups, and Rachael Young (SR/Franklin, Ohio) scored from beyond the arc. SSU held Pikeville scoreless for the first four minutes of the game.

Ali Zieverink came off the bench and amassed six points within just one minute of play. She would finish the half with a total of 17 points from 14 attempts.

The Bears would continue to play tight defense, resulting in eight turnovers from the University of Pikeville in the first half. Abby Feuchter (JR/Cincinnati, Ohio) would connect twice from distance, and Shawnee managed to make 4 of their 8 three-point shots.

Both teams started slow to start the second period, which saw Pikeville go on a 6-2 run fueled by Khalilah Quigley. Quigley, the reigning MSC Player of the Week, was held to 16 points. Shavon Robinson (SR/Canton, Ohio) and Zieverink would combine for the Bears' next three buckets to get the team back on track.

Pikeville found success in turning multiple offensive rebounds into layups and would close the lead down to just eight. However, Shawnee answered by feeding the ball to Zieverink, who received assists from Robinson and Feuchter.

Zieverink continued scoring from the block, and added points from the line and jump shots as well. Shawnee would take home the victory with the final score 75-65 on Senior Day.

Shawnee will take the court again on Feb. 23, hosting the University of the Cumberlands at Frank & Janis Waller Gymnasium. This will be the final regular-season contest held on Shawnee's home court.
