Campbell's hat trick lifts Bears to MSC victory

PORTSMOUTH, OHIO (Women's Soccer) – Jenny Campbell scored three times and Maddie Woodard added a pair, as the Shawnee State women's soccer team boasted six goals en route to a 6-4 victory over the University of the Cumberlands to open Mid-South Conference play on Saturday afternoon at Shawnee Turf.

The Patriots (0-5) took almost no time getting on the scoreboard, as Hannah Starner found a well-placed ball right at her feet inside the box and buried it in the back of the net to give UC a 1-0 advantage.

In the 15th minute, the Bears found an equalizer at the feet of Leslie Marsh. Maddie Woodard earned the assist after playing the ball down the right side of the field. Her cross to Marsh fell near the back post and the sophomore completed the finish.

Eight minutes later in the 23rd, Jenny Campbell scored her first goal of the match. The freshman split a pair of defenders after a Natasha Wilson free kick and found herself open at point blank range, giving the Bears a 2-1 advantage.

The Cumberlands responded in the 34th minute when Amerah Dixon scored off an assist from Briana Parrish, knotting the contest. SSU would respond with lightning pace, just ten seconds later.

After the ensuing kick-off, Erin Phillips played a ball to Campbell down the right side. Campbell made one touch to beat a defender before a strong finish to the back post. The Cumberlands would add one more goal in the 41st minute from Kimberly Robinson to send the contest into the break locked at 3-3.

In the second frame, it was Shawnee State who opened quickly. Heather Hencye took a shot less than a minute in which was deflected by the Patriot keeper. The deflection found Woodard, who completed the rebound and gave SSU a 4-3 advantage.

Woodard found the back of the net again in the 76th minute to push the lead to a pair. On an eerily similar play, Hencye played another ball across, this one missing the keeper before Woodard completed the finish.

The two squads traded a pair of goals in the final 15 minutes, as the Cumberlands brought the score within one on a second score from Dixon, assisted by Lidsey Ketcham and Erin Bolas.

Campbell completed her hat trick with a penalty kick following a UC handball in the 85th minute, bringing the game to its final score at 6-4.

Junior Mollie King earned a victory in the first start of her collegiate career. King recorded a save on a PK in the 43rd minute, the first save of her career, as well.

Shawnee State is back in action next Sunday on the road versus No. 8 Cumberland University. Kick-off is slated for 1 p.m.
