Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Downed by (RV) Davenport, 14-3

PORTSMOUTH – Softball fell to (RV) Davenport Sunday afternoon, 14-3. The date was originally scheduled to be a doubleheader but game two was canceled immediately following game one due to cold weather. The Panthers (13-3) scored four times in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings to guide them to the victory, while the Bears (8-7) did not help themselves out with seven errors on defense.

In the opening inning, it was the Bears that looked crisp on the field as Allie Chapman set down Davenport in succession to start the game. Kelsey Jenkins led off the Bears' half of the inning with a walk and steal of second with one out. Jenkins moved to third as the throw to try and catch her stealing sailed into the outfield. Abbey Barrett drove her home for the game's first run, while coming around to score on a dropped third strike wild pitch.

The Panthers got one back in the top of the second after a leadoff double came around to score. Barrett answered for the Bears in the bottom half of the frame with a sacrifice fly after Davenport walked the bases loaded.

Three errors in the third inning were more than enough for the leadoff runner to score for Davenport. The Bears appeared to be out of the fourth inning with just two runs allowed, but another defensive error extended the innings and Davenport tacked on two unearned runs to make the score 6-3.

With the lead for the first time, Davenport broke the game wide open with four runs in both the sixth and seventh innings. In total, the Bears allowed six unearned runs during the game, while Davenport starter Emily Maves settled down and allowed just five hits and over her seven innings. She did walk six, while striking out eight en route to her win.

Softball is currently scheduled to get back on the field Tuesday against St. Catharine in doubleheader that will get underway at 1 p.m. The doubleheader with Campbellsville that was scheduled for Monday has been moved to April 1.
