DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Women's Basketball) – The Shawnee State women's basketball team led by three points at halftime, but faced a scoring barrage over the opening 12 minutes of the second frame – falling behind by as many as 15 points – en route to a 69-65 defeat at the hands of Webber International on Saturday evening at the ICI Center in the opening game of the Daytona Beach Shootout.
Ali Zieverink (JR/West Chester, Ohio) scored a game-high 23 points on 8-of-15 shooting, while adding a 7-for-7 clip at the charity stripe. Abby Feuchter (JR/Cincinnati, Ohio) added 14 points, connecting on 4-of-8 from three-point land.
The Warriors (7-1) jumped out to a 16-7 lead over the opening six minutes, as IaQuandra Brazill connected on a triple to give WIU its biggest advantage of the first half.
SSU (10-3) stormed over the next seven minutes, using a 9-0 run to lock the score with 6:50 remaining. The Bears hit 6-of-6 free throws during the stretch, adding a three-pointer from Rachael Young (SR/Franklin, Ohio). The two squads would trade leads over the final seven minutes, with Feuchter connecting on a pair of freebies to give the Bears a 27-24 lead at the break.
Webber International jumped back on top in the opening minute and a half, extending the lead to four with 16:06 on the clock. The Warriors continued to push the tempo, holding the Bears scoreless for nearly three minutes while pushing ahead by as many as 15 points.
Shawnee State was able to make a run over a three-stretch, culminating with an and-one from Zieverink to make it 63-60 with 1:42 on the clock. Shaquora Lane put an end to the threat with a layup on the following possession to put the game on ice for WIU.
SSU enjoys no rest for the weary, turning around for a second game in two days – squaring off against Doane College back at the ICI Center on Sunday. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m.
