PORTSMOUTH – Tennis opened up its fall season with a pair of defeats at the hands of Midway and Asbury Friday afternoon at the Dr. William E. Daehler Tennis Center. In the opening match of the fall, the Bears took a pair of doubles matches against Asbury but were stopped at every position in the late match against Asbury.
After starting out in a deficit after playing the singles matches first against Midway, junior Aubrey Johnson and freshman Carmen Staton got the Bears on the board with their first team point of the season, winning the third doubles points by an 8-3 margin.
At the top doubles slot, the Bears Kyra Keeton and Shelbie Wulfekamp again teamed up this season and went back-and-forth with their opponents all the way until the tiebreakers. Serving second, the duo had to hold serve to force the tiebreak but would do so before taking the match by a 7-4 final in that tiebreak.
In the match against Asbury, the two teams started with the three doubles positions but were unable to find a victory in the second match. The closest call came at No. 2 doubles where Contessa Brown and Karley Stites fell by an 8-5 margin. The Bears were also unable to find a team point in singles as the day came to a close.
After playing tomorrow in the Steven A. Hunter Hope Tournament on Saturday, the team will play its final home match of the fall against Berea Sunday at noon.
