ANDERSON, Ind. – Joseph Winters and Danny Parsons had been knocking on the door of scoring the first goals of their SSU careers all season long. On Saturday, the offensive newcomers each scored their first goals of the season and got the Bears back in the win column with a 2-1 win in double overtime against Anderson University.
The game saw the Bears trail 1-0 at the half but Parsons answered back with a goal in the second half with just under 20 minutes to play. After a scoreless first overtime, Winters would tally the game-winning goal with just 2:01 left on the clock before the game would have ended in a draw.
The win Saturday was just the second in 11 tries against Anderson. To find the last time SSU beat Anderson, you would have to go all the way back to the 1993 season when the Bears came out victorious by a 3-1 margin in the first-ever meeting between the programs. The overtime win also broke a streak of eight straight overtime games that the Bears had either lost or tied. The last overtime win for the Bears came back in 2006 at home against Point Park.
Anderson got its first goal of the game in the 38th minute of the opening half as Brady Marsh scored an unassisted tally to put the hosts up 1-0. Shawnee State would have four shots in the opening half but put just one of those attempts on target.
The offense picked up in the second half for both teams as the Bears took a total of eight shots. However, it was not until the 71st minute that this persistence would pay off as Joseph Webster connected with Parsons on a through ball to knot the score at one.
Anderson would finish the second half with seven shots but and three corner kicks but Thomas Carbonari would finish the second half with three saves, giving him four during the 90 minute regulation, to send the game to overtime.
SSU had the only shot of the first overtime period but that attempt was off target and the two teams went to a final 10 minute overtime session in order to try and determine a winner.
The hosts would get the first shot of the second overtime but SSU would end it in the 108th minute when Winters got on the end of a double assist from Chris Wiget and Ben Pulsford.
With a win to snap the four-game skid the Bears were riding coming into the contest, men's soccer will now head to Georgetown for a Mid-South Conference meeting this Wednesday at 8 p.m. The Bears will also travel to Bluefield next Saturday for a 3 p.m. game.
