WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – Volleyball dropped fell to the University of the Cumberlands in straight sets (25-20, 25-16, 25-21). The Bears are now 4-4 through eight matches with a 1-3 mark in Mid-South Conference Play. Cumberlands' (5-3, 1-3 MSC) victory was its first-ever victory in five chances against SSU.
As a collective unit, the Bears just could not get their hitting game together as they finished with a .038 hitting percentage for the match. Devan Scarberry led the Bears with nine kills on the night while Kristi Humble, Tiffany Jackson and Paige Zelich all finished with five kills for the match. However, the Bears also committed 29 attack errors against 33 kills for the game. Hannah Gephart finished the match with 15 assists while Bonnie Huesing totaled eight helpers.
Defensively, Carly Mazza led the team with 13 digs while Kirsti Yates and Madison Smith each dug out nine kill attempts. Humble also led the team in blocks with a pair of block assists while Tiffany Jackson and Scarberry each recorded a single block assist.
Shawnee State will now head to Lebanon, Tenn. and Cumberland University for a three-day stint. The Bears will open the three days at Cumberland with an MSC match on Thursday at 6 .m. On Friday and Saturday, the team will play in the Volleydawg Classic where it will face Fisk and Lindenwood Saturday and Union and Cumberland on Sunday.
