MOUNT VERNON, Ohio – Men's soccer was dealt a 4-0 loss in its first true road game of the season Saturday afternoon at Mount Vernon Nazarene. The Cougars got a goal from both Brent Schilling and Kwaku Frimpong in each half to hand the Bears (1-1) their first loss of the season.
The Cougars held a 14-8 advantage in shots for the game but the Bears were unable to put a single shot on target for the entire 90 minutes. In goal for the Bears, Thomas Carbonari made two saves in his 66-plus minutes in goal before freshman Justin Mahlmeister made his SSU debut in goal and stopped the only shot he would face in his 23:21 of playing time.
Mount Vernon Nazarene got in the board in the 14th minute when the SSU defense was unable to clear the ball from its defensive third of the field. Schilling would make the Bears pay for that mistake with his finish to put the Cougars up 1-0. Mount Vernon stretched its lead to 2-0 in the 32nd minute when Frimpong got on the receiving end of a thru ball as his squad took that lead into the half.
After closing the scoring in the opening half, Frimpong would knock home his second goal of the day to open the scoring in the second half with a goal in the 55th minute. This ball was drilled off the crossbar but hit low enough to ricochet into the net for the 3-0 lead. Just over 10 minutes later, Schilling would beat the defense on his own this time and add his second goal of the game to make it 4-0, which is how it would remain until the final buzzer.
For the Bears offense, Joseph Webster and Nick Dowdell each finished the game with two shots while four other players would record a single shot.
Men's soccer will now look forward to its home opener next Saturday, September 7 against St. Francis. That game will get started at 2 p.m. and be the first off six straight home games that the Bears will host.
