PORTSMOUTH – Allie Chapman has been named the Mid-South Conference Pitcher of the Week after picking up three victories in the circle during the most recent voting period which ran from Monday, March 25 through Sunday, March 31. The award is the first of the sophomore's career. For the week, Chapman pitched 19.1 innings allowed just 13 hits and posted an ERA of 1.45 while punching out 15 hitters.
Starting off her week against Rio Grande, the lefthander flirted with a perfect game for the first 5.1 innings of the six inning run-rule victory. Ultimately, her bid at perfection was denied by an error with one out during the RedStorm's final at-bats and she would lose the no-hitter on a two-out single after that batter should not have even come to bat had the fielding error not been committed.
She finished that start with a complete game victory with the one hit being the only mark on her pitching line as she struck out eight hitters.
Back in the circle the next day at Pikeville, Chapman went 6.1 innings. She started off the game by retiring the first seven hitters that she faced and would concede just four hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out four and walking one to pick up the victory in SSU's 3-2 victory.
Wrapping up the week with her third start in three days, Chapman threw another complete game in the circle, helping her team salvage a split with Davenport – a team that is currently receiving votes in the NAIA Coaches' Top 25 Poll. In the Davenport game, she struck out three batters while walking one and allowing eight hits and three runs in the Bears' 6-3 victory.
The week's award did not take into consideration yesterday's win against Montreat in which she threw a complete game three-hitter to help the Bears take two in the opening doubleheader of that four-game series.
For the season, Chapman is currently 5-4 with a 2.37 ERA. She has made nine starts and pitched a complete game in seven of those games. This includes three shutouts. In 59.0 innings of work this season, she has allowed 51 hits while striking out 40 hitters. Opponents are batting .225 off of her.
The Bears will be back in action this afternoon in the second doubleheader against Montreat which will begin at 1 p.m. This doubleheader will also mark the final scheduled non-conference opponent this season. Softball will play three MSC doubleheaders this week as they travel to UVA-Wise on Wednesday before hosting Lindsey Wilson (Saturday at 1 p.m.) and UVA-Wise (Sunday at 2 p.m.) this weekend.
