Softball Splits Season Opener at Midway

MIDWAY, Ky. – After finally getting to take the field after multiple cancelations and postponements, softball headed to Midway on Wednesday afternoon for its season opener. The Bears came out strong in the opening game and started the season with a 6-4 victory in game one. Midway would then bounce back and take game two by the final of 7-3.

The first game saw the Bears down by one heading into the top of the seventh, 4-3. However, they used a three-run inning in their final at-bats to win the season opener 6-4. Ali Thompson went out and finished off the win with a complete game effort. She pitched seven innings and allowed four runs on seven hits, striking out nine of the 28 batters that she faced.

Offensively, eight of the nine starters collected a hit in the game while four recorded multi-hit games and five drove in a run. Kelsey Jenkins finished the day 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs and two RBI. Ericka Leighty, Kirsti Yates and Holly Brabson also went 2-for-4. Yates hit the only home run of the day while Leighty also added a run and RBI.

In game two, SSU was holding a 3-2 edge heading into the bottom of the fifth before Midway put five runs on the scoreboard. Allie Chapman got the start and went 4.2 innings before giving way to freshman Tiffani Hale with two outs in the fifth. Hale would get the Bears out of that jam in the fifth and finished the game with 1.1 innings of no-hit baseball while striking out two of the four hitters that she faced.

Brabson also finished with two hits in the second game, making her 4-for-7 on the day. Five other players also recorded hits in the game. Defensively, SSU played error-free on the field after committing just one error in the opening game.

The Bears will open their home slate this Friday against Madonna with the first game of the doubleheader getting underway at 3 p.m.
