GEORGETOWN, Ky. – Women's soccer went to Georgetown looking for its first victory over the Tigers in program history. For 76-plus minutes, the two sides battled to a scoreless tie. But in those final 14 minutes, the Tigers (3-3-1, 2-2 MSC) would knock home two goals to once again deny the Bears (7-3, 1-3 MSC).
The opening half saw the two sides battle about as even as possible. Both teams took seven shots with Georgetown owning a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal but Emily Kuehn stopped each of those four attempts while GC's Danielle Lang did likewise with SSU's three runs at goal.
The Bears would take the upper hand in terms of shots during the second half as they held a 5-1 advantage in total shots during the first 31 minutes of play in the second half. The Tigers only shot during the opening 31 minutes of the second half came just two minutes in as Kuehn was in position for the save.
Shawnee State countered with a Jessica Fair shot that sailed over the crossbar in the 50th minute while Schuyler Jones and Katie Craft would watch their attempts for the first tally of the game travel wide in the 54th and 56th minutes.
Jones and Hannah Figlestahler would put the first tests of the half to Lang in the 64th and 71st minutes of the game but again SSU was unable to tally the go-ahead goal.
Almost a full 30 minutes since its most recent shot in the game, Sam Amend broke through the Shawnee State defense and tallied an unassisted goal in the in the 77th minute to give her side a 1-0 lead. All of a sudden, the Bears went from knocking on the door to and potentially scoring the go ahead goal to just over 13 minutes remaining that they had to find an equalizer.
That task got even more difficult when Georgetown found its second goal of the game in the 84th minute with another unassisted effort. This second Tiger goal came off the foot of Emily McLellen.
With just 6:30 to play and facing a two goal deficit, Elizabeth Abbott and Allison Nagle recorded a pair of shots with the remaining time but the first traveled wide while Lang stopped that final attempt to finish her shutout with six saves.
SSU finished with a 14-10 advantage in shots for the game. Fair and Nagle each recorded three of those takes while three other players recorded a pair of shots. Kuehn finished the night with five saves as she faced seven shots on goal for the evening.
Women's soccer will be back in action in another MSC meeting at Bluefield this Saturday at 1 p.m. That match will also be a part of a doubleheader with the men's game that is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
