PORTSMOUTH – Women's soccer was within a goal at halftime and had some offense going to start the second half but Campbellsville (9-3-1, 5-2 MSC) would be the team to strike next and would eventually take a 4-1 edge before finalizing the 5-2 victory. The Tigers came into today's game in third place in the conference and stayed in that spot with the win during a rain soaked Saturday afternoon.
Teresa Welch tallied both goals for the Bears as she scored in each half coming off the bench. Both of her goals came off of corner kicks. She now has three goals this season, matching her career high that she set during her freshman campaign. Her multi-goal performance was the second of her career as she also tallied two goals against Rio Grande during her sophomore campaign.
Both teams went through an adjustment period early on to less than ideal conditions. Campbellsville had the only three shots of the game in the opening 20 minutes of play but were still scoreless as their second shot off the game skipped off the post.
The Tigers picked up the offensive pressure shortly after and scored their first goal of the game in the 23rd minute off a corner kick. Just over 10 minutes later, the Tigers would add their second goal of the half to make it 2-0.
Shawnee State would get on the board and cut the deficit in half with a goal in the 43rd minute after a corner began to skip around on the wet turf before finding its way on to the foot of Welch for the strike finish to make it a 2-1 game at the half.
The Bears would draw a couple early corner tries to start the second half and have another pair of shots on goal in the opening 10 minutes of that half but could not beat the keeper. After some offensive pressure from SSU, Campbellsville reversed that trend in the 60th minute with Mhaira Fyfe scoring off the assist from Rachel Veatch. Those two would reverse roles in the 66th minute goal to make it 4-1.
Welch added her second goal of the game with under 10 minutes to play as Hannah Figlestahler, who had just been subbed in, took a corner kick and found Welch for the finish. Campbellsville would add the game's final tally with just over a minute to play on a breakaway goal to make it a 5-2 final.
The Tigers held a 21-12 advantage in shots for the game with a 14-6 edge in shots on goal. Four different players recorded two shots in the game for SSU while a total of eight different players had at least one shot in the contest. In goal, Emily Kuehn made nine saves while her counterpart Brandie Hagerman stopped four of her six shots faced on the day.
Women's soccer will be back at home this Monday against Kentucky Christian in its final non-conference match of the year. The regular season closes with a pair of MSC meetings with St. Catharine and Pikeville in which the Bears will need some results to clinch their spot in the MSC Tournament.
