PORTSMOUTH – Volleyball dispatched of Point Park in non-conference action Friday afternoon on their home courts. For the second day in a row, it was a win in four games for the Bears (14-11) as they reversed a five-game loss from last season against Point Park to stay unbeaten (4-0) all-time on their home courts against the Pioneers (18-10).
The opening game was a come-from-behind effort from the Bears as they found themselves in a 17-12 hole and needing to make a rally. Nine of the next 13 points would go the way of SSU for that much needed rally to tie the game at 21-all. However, the Bears would then find themselves in a 24-22 hole but saved two game points, and eventually took four straight, to go up 1-0 with a 26-24 victory.
Point Park would rebound with a 25-19 victory in the second game but SSU would retake the lead for good in the third game with a 25-23 victory in the third game. The Bears then just continued to roll in the clinching game as they picked up a 25-16 win to close out the victory.
As a team, SSU finished the match with 59 kills. Paige Zelich led a trio of SSU players that recorded double figure kill totals with 16. Kristi Humble added 11 more while Christina Shelton finished with 10 for her second game with double-digit kill totals. Both Zelich and Humble each finished with four blocks, two solo and two unassisted, to help the Bears on defense as well.
Hannah Gephart tallied 33 of the team's 52 assists in the victory while Bonnie Huesing chipped in with 16 more. Defensively, Carly Mazza finished with 24 digs while Madison Smith recorded 19 more. Gephart also recorded double figures in this category with 15 digs off of Point Park attacks.
Volleyball will now head back on the road Saturday as they make the trek to Bluefield for a 2:30 p.m. match. The Bears will then be back at home Sunday against Lindsey Wilson at 2 p.m.
