Volleyball Takes Down Bluefield, 3-0

BLUEFIELD, Va. – Volleyball kept its winning ways going on Saturday afternoon with its third victory in three days. After dropping a game in each of its two previous days, the Bears finally picked up a sweep at Bluefield (25-16, 25-22, 25-14). The victory was the second sweep of Bluefield this season after also picking up the quick win on its home courts earlier this month.

Paige Zelich led an offensive attack that killed 44 attempts while committing just 16 attack errors. As a team, SSU hit .262 for the match. Zelich finished with a match-high 17 kills against just three attack errors in 25 attempts for a .560 hitting percentage. Zelich now has 10 or more kills in 15 matches this season, including four of the last five. Her 17 kills on the afternoon was her third-highest total this season.

Christina Shelton and Devan Scarberry each added eight kills to the winning effort while Kristi Humble finished with six kills. Humble also finished with a team-high four blocks (one solo).

Hannah Gephart finished with 23 assists for her hitters while Bonnie Huesing added 12 more in the win. Both setters, along with Carly Mazza each had a service ace for the match. Mazza also led the defense with 18 digs while Gephart tallied 11 more.

The four matches in four days streak comes to an end tomorrow as the Bears return back to Waller Gymnasium looking to go a perfect 4-for-4 during this stretch. However, it won't be easy at No. 11 and MSC unbeaten Lindsey Wilson will await the team tomorrow in a 2 p.m. match. This will be the first of five home matches in a row to close out the regular season, all of which will Mid-South Conference meetings.
