Men's Soccer Topped by No. 3 Rio Grande, 6-0

RIO GRANDE, Ohio – Men's soccer fell to No. 3 Rio Grande by a 6-0 final Saturday evening. The RedStorm (9-1-2, 4-0-2 MSC) scored four times in the opening 23 minutes and five times overall in the opening half to pace their victory against the Bears (4-8, 1-5 MSC).

Reigning NAIA Player of the Week Luiz Filho showed off his national prowess as he netted four different goals in the contest to pace the RedStorm offense. Jon Dodson recorded a pair of saves in the game to finish with the shutout in goal for the hosts.

Rio scored its first goal of the game just under four minutes in as Filho tallied on a corner kick. The RedStorm would then capitalize on their third corner of the game as well when Filho tallied for the second time just over nine minutes into the game.

Maximilliano Viera would add Rio's third goal of the game in the in the 16th minute of play. Filho would finish his scoring blitz early on with 22 minutes remaining the in the opening half when he and Orlando Zapata connected for the second time after the duo also set up the second goal of the contest.

However, Filho still was not done with his scoring as he tallied his fourth goal of the game with 9:41 to play in the opening half to make it 5-0 heading into the half. Just under five minutes into the second half, Rio Grande would add its sixth and final goal of the game.

For the game, Rio finished with a 22-2 advantage in shots for the game. The RedStorm also held an 11-2 advantage in shots on goal. Ryan Klear recorded the Bears' first shot of the game with just under two minutes to play in the opening half. SSU's other shot in the game came from Dylan Whitehead with just over nine minutes remaining in the contest. Thomas Carbonari made a total of four saves in the contest while the Bears' defense also came up with a defensive save.

Men's soccer will be back at home next Saturday, October 19 against No. 23 Campbellsville. That contest will be a doubleheader with the women's team and is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
