Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball Downed by Georgetown, 3-0

GEORGETOWN, Ky. – Volleyball was dealt a 3-0 loss (25-22, 25-15, 15-15) to host Georgetown (6-2) in what was the de facto championship game of the Rumpke Invitational as both teams went unbeaten on Friday. The Bears (6-2) finished the weekend invitational with a 2-1 record.

Despite both teams being Mid-South schools, today's match did not count towards the MSC conference record for either school. With its second runner-up finish in as many weekend tournaments, Shawnee State was well represented on the all-tournament team. For the Bears, Alex Pohl and Paige Zelich were each individually honored as all-tournament team members.

Georgetown, who found itself just out of the top 25 poll in the most recent release, used a strong defensive effort take a close first set. The Bears committed just four attack errors in 42 chances during the opening game, but the Tigers recorded 24 digs in the first to stifle the attack. A strong defensive effort from Shawnee State limited Georgetown to a .227 hitting percentage in the opening game, led by Kirsti Yates' eight digs. However, the Tigers were slightly better in the service game and blocking at the net to pull out the win.

In the next two games, Shawnee State kept up the strong defensive presence and held the Tigers to just a .233 hitting percentage for the match. However, in what can only be categorized as an uncharacteristic performance so far this season, the Bears committed more attacks errors than kills over the final two games as Georgetown finished off the match.

For the match, Zelich finished with a team-high six kills, followed by Kelsey Bielanow's 5, while Tiffany Jackson and Pohl each had four. Hannah Gephart assisted on 12 on those, while Carly Mazza totaled 10 for the match. Yates finished the match with 17 digs, while Zelich added 8 more.

The Bears will now be back at home on Monday for a Mid-South matchup against Pikeville. Monday's conference match will get underway at 6 p.m.
