PORTSMOUTH – Three second half goals by No. 3 Lindsey Wilson (8-2-1, 5-0 MSC) sealed the match against women's soccer Sunday night on the Shawnee Turf. The Bears (3-7, 0-3 MSC) trailed by just one heading into the break, but added two goals in the opening five minutes of the second half before finishing off a 4-0 win.
Despite taking 12 shots in the opening 45 minutes, Emily Kuehn stopped seven of the eight shots on goal to limit the Blue Raiders' offense. For the game, the sophomore goalkeeper made a career-high 15 saves as she faced 19 shots during her time in goal. Shelbi Halverson played the final 7:25 in goal and did not face any shots during her time.
Lindsey Wilson's first goal of the game came in the 21st minute of the opening half off a cross in the box for the quick finish. Brittney Brooks would put Shawnee State's only shot of the half on target, but her attempt would be saved for the only work on the day for the Blue Raiders' keepers.
Just 54 seconds into the second half, Lindsey Wilson would add its second goal of the game after an initial shot was saved. The follow up rebound would be blocked by the Bears' defense, but a persistant attack would finally finish the third shot inside the 18. In the 50th minute, Lindsey Wilson would add another unassisted goal for the 3-0 lead. The final goal of the game came in the 58th minute as neither side would tally in the remaining 32-plus minutes. The fourth and final goal would also come off a rebound attempt after the initial shot was stopped by Kuehn.
The Bears would take two shots over the final 45 minutes as freshmen Schuyler Jones and Hannah Figlestahler each took attempts the went wide and high, respectively. In addition to the two shots, the Bears also earned two corner kicks in the final half. Despite the three goals, Kuehn still made eight saves in the second half before being subbed out.
Tonight's contest opened a streak of three straight home matches for SSU. The Bears will be back in action against Pikeville this Wednesday, October 3 in a doubleheader with the men's team beginning at 2 p.m.
