Ellis' home run helps Bears split

Shawnee State (17-7, 9-5 MSC) was able to split the double-header in a Mid-South Conference clash against the Tigers of Georgetown College (24-10, 11-3 MSC).

The first game was a pitchers battle between Shawnee State's Ali Thompson (Franklin Furnace, OH) and Georgetown's Michell Dresselhaus.

Dresselhaus shut down the Bears allowing only two hits in seven innings pitched, shutting out Shawnee State.

Thompson (9-3) threw 7.0 innings allowing one earned run on five hits and striking out two batters.

Thompson and Dresselhaus battled back-and-forth through the first four innings pitching scoreless and hitless innings as each team looked for a break through inning.

The Tigers got their inning in the fifth as they finally got to Thompson, scoring a run on their first two hits of the ballgame giving them a 1-0 lead.

Thompson continued to pitch strong for the Bears keeping them within striking distance but the bats could not heat up for Shawnee State.

Georgetown then added to their 1-0 lead with another run in top of the seventh as that would be all Dresselhaus would need as the Tigers took the first game 2-0.

In the second game the Bears jumped on the Tigers first. In the bottom of the third inning Shawnee State's Kelsey Jenkins (Wheelersburg, OH) started the Bears with a walk. After a sacrifice bunt from Allison Chapman (Chesapeake, OH), freshman Katy Bender (Pickerington, OH) hit a two-out triple to score Shawnee State first run of the ballgame.

Ericka Leighty (South Point, OH) followed Bender with a single up the middle to extend the Bears lead to 2-0.

Leading 2-0, Shawnee State extended their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Jourdan Priddy (Xenia, OH) led off the inning with a single to center field. Two batters later, Brittany Ellis hit a two-run homerun, pushing their lead to 4-0.

After the Tigers scored a run in the top of the fifth to cut the deficit to 4-1, Shawnee State answered quickly in the bottom half of the inning. Bender started the inning with a single through the left side and eventually stole second. Kirtsi Yates (Chillicothe, OH) singled to right field and Bender scored pushing their lead to 5-1.

The Tigers scored in the top of the seventh but Thompson came in and closed out the game 5-2, winning their ninth game in the conference.

Shawnee State will return to action tomorrow as they travel to Rio Grande, OH to take on rival Rio Grande University in a MSC match-up.
