The Shawnee State Softball Team (4-2) split a doubleheader with Evangel on Wednesday of their spring break trip in Pensacola, FL.
It took extra Innings for the Bears to pull out a 1-0 victory over Evangel in the opener. Shawnee's junior Ericka Leighty (South Point, OH) scored in the ninth inning on a single to center field by sophomore Kirsti Yates (Chillicothe, OH) for the victory.
Junior Ali Thompson (Franklin Furnace, OH) pitched a complete game allowing four hits with only walk, while striking out 11.
Sophomore Brittany Ellis (Lucasville, OH) went 2-for-3 in the game.
In the night cap, the Bears lost 6-1. Evangel scored a run in the first and third to take a 2-0 lead. They then posted four more runs in the fifth to extend their lead to 6-0. Shawnee State's freshman Katy Bender (Canal Winchester, OH) scored the Bears only run of the game in the fifth on a base hit by Leighty.
Sophomore Tara Prater (Hilliard, OH) was tagged with the loss and fell to 2-1 on the mound. She pitched 4.2 innings and allowed six runs (two earned) on eight hits. Freshman Allison Chapman (Chesapeake, OH) worked the final 2.1 innings and allowed two hits with a strikeout.
