Shawnee State (16-4, 8-2) spilt with Campbellsville (25-13, 9-2) in a Mid-South Conference showdown between the two top teams in the conference. The Bears used two homeruns and a complete game from Ali Thompson to win the first game on Saturday afternoon.
Shawnee State started the day with a bang. Kirsti Yates (Chillicothe, OH) hit a two-run homerun in the top of the first to give the Bears a 2-0 lead. Yates finished the day going 1-for-3 with two RBI's and a homerun.
Leading 2-0 Shawnee State was not done with the long ball. Holly Brabson hit a solo-homerun in the bottom of the fourth to extend their lead to 3-0.
Shawnee State was not satisfied, after giving up a run in the top of the sixth and leading 3-1, it was Brabson again who delivered. Brabson, who finished 2-for-3 with two RBI's and a homerun, hit a double to center field scoring Yates from second base.
Jourdan Priddy (Xenia, OH) followed Brabson with a single up the middle to score Brabson from second, giving the Bears a 5-1 lead.
Ali Thompson (9-1) who started on the mound for the Bears threw 7.0 innings giving up one run on six hits.
It was a battle for the top two teams in the MSC as Campbellsville jumped on Shawnee State early in the second game of the double-header. The Tigers scored one run off starting pitcher Tara Prater (Hilliard, OH) in the first inning.
Campbellsville threatened to score in the second and third innings but the Bears defense came to play as Yates made key plays at shortstop to end the innings, keeping Shawnee State within 1-0.
In the top of the fifth the Tigers again jumped on Shawnee State. After Jennifer England singled and a fly out to left field, Heather Oakley hit a two-run homerun to extend Campbellsville lead to 3-0.
In the top of the sixth the Tigers hit another two-run homerun to push their lead to 5-0. It marked the fourth homerun on the day, two for both teams as each team seemed to use the long ball on the day.
Shawnee State was to score one run in the bottom of the seventh but it was not enough as the Bears fell 7-1.
Shawnee State will be in action April 3rdas they travel to Columbia, KY to take on Lindsey Wilson. The Bears next home game will be on April 6th in a MSC showdown against Georgetown College.
