The Shawnee State Baseball Team (14-15) swept a doubleheader at the University of Virginia at Wise on Thursday afternoon.
Shawnee State came from behind and posted three runs in eighth inning to down the Cavaliers 4-3.
UVa-Wise scored a pair of runs in the fourth to get on the board first. Mayson Mays led the inning off with a double and Kirk Jennings singled. A sacrifice fly by Brian King scored Mays. Jennings scored on a Shawnee State error, giving the Cavaliers the 2-0 advantage.
Shawnee State got on the board in the fifth as senior Quentin Everman (Galloway, OH) hit an RBI single scoring senior AJ Gomez (Spring, TX).
UVa-Wise answered with a run of their own in the fith as Mays homered extending their lead to 3-1.
In the eighth for the Bears, junior Adam Wamsley (Wheelersburg, OH) led off with a single and stole second. Freshman Matt Jones (Greenup, KY) had an RBI single, scoring Wamsley. Junior pinch runner senior Aaron Suydam (Painesville, OH) knotted the game as he scored on a base hit by freshman Cody Spires (Lancaster, OH). Senior Justin Marrero's (Reynoldsburg, OH) single scored Spires and gave the Bears the 4-3 lead and eventually the victory.
Senior Austin Dunfee (Pomeroy, OH) got the victory. Dunfee pitched 8.1 innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on nine hits. He didn't allow a walk and struck out seven in the game. Junior Jordan Williams (Uniontown, OH) recorded the save pitching the final 0.2 innings, striking out one.
Chris Smith was tagged with the loss for the Cavaliers. He came in during the sixth inning and pitched 3.0 innings allowing three runs on seven hits, two walks and striking out one.
Everman finished 4-for-5 with an RBI in the game, while Spires went 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI.
It took extra innings for Shawnee State to win the nightcap 3-2. The Bears scored in the third on a sacrifice fly by Gesick. In the fourth, Wamsley scored on a fielder's choice by Jones. The Cavaliers knotted the game in the sixth. Juan Dominguez scored on an SSU error and Murphy scored on an RBI single by CJ McAndrews.
In the eighth, the Bears picked up the victory as Wamsley scored on an RBI double by Jones.
Williams relieved senior Alex Taku (Santa Cruz, CA) and worked the final 2.1 innings to pick up the win. He did not allow a hit while striking out three Cavaliers. Taku pitched 5.2 innings allowing two runs, both unearned, on six hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
Ryan Crosby was tagged with the loss as he pitched a complete game allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits, three walks and struck out 10 batters.
Wamsley finished 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored.
