The Shawnee State Women's Basketball Team wrapped up a very tough three game road trip with a 77-63 loss at 8th ranked University of the Cumberlands on Saturday afternoon. Shawnee State falls to 14-4 on the season and 5-2 in conference action. The Patriots remain unbeaten in the Mid-South Conference with a 6-0 record and improve their season record to 16-1.
The Bears trailed 38-31 at the break, but the Patriots were able to extend their lead in the second as they out shot Shawnee State 44 percent to 37 percent from the floor.
Shawnee State was led by junior Alex Pohl (Loveland, OH) who scored 13 points and pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. Senior Abby Ballman (Cincinnati, OH) had 12 points and six rebounds in the game while dishing out three assists. Sophomore Alannah Sheets (Leon, WV) added 10 points in the loss.
Five Patriots scored in double-figures. Lauren Wombles led all scorers with 16 points, while Jade Howard added 14 points and seven assists. Dace Bicane and Haley Ratliff each scored 13 points for the Patriots and Vernisha Moss totaled 10 points in the win.
Shawnee State shot 40 percent in the game, while the Patriots shot 46 percent. From beyond the arc, both teams shot evenly. Shawnee State made six 3-pointers for 33 percent and the Patriots shot 32 percent. At the line the Bears shot a perfect 13-for-13. The University of the Cumberlands went 18-for-23 for 78 percent.
Shawnee State returns home on Thursday, January 19 to host West Virginia Tech in a non-conference matchup. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. in Waller Gymnasium. On Saturday, the Bears host rival Rio Grande in a "Pink Out". Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
