Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Bears fall in extra periods

It took extra time for former AMC rival Cedarville to knock off the Bears 2-1. Both teams played a very controlled first half with neither team mounting many serious scoring opportunities. The evenly played first half ended 0-0, with Cedarville holding a slight edge in shots 6-4.

However, the second half proved to be an exciting match that went down to the last second. SSU's Chad Johnston started the scoring in the first minute of the second half. He finished a penalty kick after being taking down in box for his team leading 6th goal of the season. It didn't take long for the Yellow Jackets to respond. In the 48th minute Cedarville's Dillon King got his foot on the ball at the six yard line after a mad scramble in front of the goal. His shot found the back of the net and Cedarville had tied the score at 1-1.

Shawnee playing their 3rd game since Saturday afternoon, played a gusty second half keeping Cedarville from scoring again despite several great opportunities. The Bear's goalkeeper Kevin Fischer made some spectacular saves to keep the Bears alive. The last minutes saw a Yellow Jacket shot hit the post and two corner kicks end with shots on goal that Fischer kept out of the net!

The Bears looked to finish things quickly as they took the overtime kick off right down the field only to have Dylan Stevens' shot deflected wide. For much of the rest of the period, Cedarville was able to control the ball recording six shots to SSU's one. However, neither team was able to tally the winning goal, forcing the game into the second overtime.

The Bears seemed to get their second wind and had many some great scoring opportunities to finish the game. However, things weren't to go the Bears way. in the 116th minute Scott Roseberg took a through ball from Dillon King and was able to slip a shot past the diving Fischer to give Cedarville the 2-1 victory.

Cedarville out shot the Bears 30-13. SSU's Kevin Fischer recorded 12 saves in the loss while Alex Scott picked up the win stopping five Bear shots.

Shawnee State travels to the University of the Cumberlands on Saturday, September 17 to open Mid-South Conference action. Game time is set to begin at 4:00 p.m. in Williamsburg, Kentucky.
