Bears' defeat Mountaineers 7-1 on Alumni Weekend

The Shawnee State Women's Soccer Team outmuscled Berea College to a 7-1 victory in a non-conference game on Saturday afternoon. The Bears' improve to 4-0 on the season, while the Mountaineers fall to 0-2.

Junior Brittney Brooks led the Bears as she recorded a hat trick, scoring the Bears' first three goals of the game. Brooks tallies seven goals on the season in just two games. She scored her first goal in the 5th minute of play on an assist by senior Kat Westendorf. Junior Staci Johnson teamed up with Brooks in the 27th minute to give the Bears the 2-0 advantage at the half.

Brooks opened the second half with a goal assisted by freshman Allison Nagle in the 51 minute of play. Shawnee State allowed Berea on the board in the 63rd minute on an own goal. Johnson added to the Bears' score as she recorded her second goal of the season in the 76th minute of play. At the 80:20 mark of the game, sophomore Bethany Ward scored on a penalty kick. Shawnee State two more goals within a minute. Freshman Chantel Harr scored on an assist from sophomore Teresa Welch and then Welch found Allison Nagle for a goal to give the Bears the 7-1 win.

Freshman Emily Kuehn got the win for the Bears as she played 57:30 minutes in goal and tallied three saves. Freshman Shelbi Halverson replaced Kuehn in goal and tallied one save.

Shawnee State outshot the Mountaineers 17-4 in shots on goal.

The Bears' travel to Salem International on Tuesday for a non-conference contest. Shawnee State returns home on Monday, September 19 to host Alderson-Broaddus. Game time set for 3:00 p.m.
